Vinyl and wood are the two most common choices for a residential fence around Muskegon. Wood costs less up front. Vinyl costs less to keep up. Which comes out ahead depends on how long you'll be in the house and how much upkeep you'll actually do. Here's a side-by-side using published figures.
Up-front cost
| Wood | Vinyl | |
|---|---|---|
| Installed, per linear foot (HomeGuide) | $20 to $50 | $30 to $60 |
| 6-foot privacy, per linear foot (HomeGuide) | $25 to $50 | $40 to $60 |
| Typical lifespan (HomeGuide) | Varies by species, see below | 20 to 30 years; 40+ well maintained |
| Routine upkeep | Reseal every 1 to 2 years | Washing; no sealing |
For a 150-foot backyard run, HomeGuide's per-foot ranges work out to roughly $3,000 to $7,500 for wood and $4,500 to $9,000 for vinyl, before gates, removal of an old fence, and permits. That's simple multiplication of the published ranges, not a quote.
Lifespan depends on the wood
HomeGuide's wood guide gives a wide range of 15 to 50 years or more, depending on the species and how well it's kept up:
- Western red cedar: 25 years or more.
- Redwood: 25 to 35 years.
- White cedar: 15 to 20 years.
- Basic untreated pine: 5 to 10 years. Treated pine lasts longer if it's sealed.
HomeGuide says the most common reason wood fences fail early is not sealing them. It says pine needs resealing every 1 to 2 years. If you won't do that, or pay someone to, budget for a shorter life.
Where vinyl has trouble
HomeGuide lists vinyl's downsides as fading, cracking from impacts or extreme temperature changes, visible dirt and mildew stains, and swaying in high wind. Its fence repair guide adds two points that matter later. Damaged vinyl panels often have to be replaced as a whole, not patched. And matching color can be hard, because vinyl fades.
For a Muskegon yard, that suggests a few questions to ask an installer:
- Wind. On an open or lakeshore lot, ask about post reinforcement. HomeGuide says builders often recommend aluminum-reinforced posts for vinyl privacy fences.
- Cold. Vinyl can crack with impacts and big temperature swings. A fence next to the driveway, where snow gets plowed into it, is the likely spot for damage.
- Spare panels. Ask whether the manufacturer's style will still be available in a few years, or buy a spare section.
Where wood has trouble
Wood rots when it stays wet. NOAA's normals for Muskegon County Airport average 87.2 inches of snow a season, and drifts against a solid fence keep boards wet into spring. HomeGuide's repair guide prices rot repair at $300 to $1,200 and says a wood fence over 20 years old is often better replaced than repaired.
Wood's advantage is that it's easy to repair. A broken board or picket is a cheap fix, and HomeGuide lists wood repair at $20 to $35 per linear foot, compared with $25 to $45 for vinyl.
Local rules don't usually pick for you
Muskegon-area ordinances regulate height, placement, and which side faces out more than material. North Muskegon requires ornamental metal, rot-resistant wood, or other high-quality, durable materials. Muskegon Heights lists solid board fences as an approved screening material. Every city summarized on this site has height limits that apply to both materials equally. See where we serve.
A quick way to decide
- Staying 15+ years and want low upkeep: vinyl, with reinforced posts if the lot is windy.
- Tighter budget, or you like the look and don't mind staining: cedar.
- Short-term or rental: treated pine, knowing it needs sealing.
