Privacy fences in the Muskegon area

Where each city allows a solid fence, what a privacy fence costs by material, and what lake-effect snow, wind, and sand mean for the one you choose.

A privacy fence is usually a 6-foot solid fence around a backyard. That's the job most people mean when they ask for fence quotes. Around Muskegon, the two questions that matter most are where you're allowed to put a solid fence, and which material will hold up to lake-effect winters. Here's what the published guides and local ordinances say.

Where a privacy fence can go

Each city summarized below allows taller fences in back than in front, and none of them allows a 6-foot solid fence across a front yard.

  • City of Muskegon: up to 6 feet behind the front building line. In the front yard, solid fencing is limited to 3 feet. The city also bans fence screening materials such as slats or mesh, so you can't turn a chain link fence into a privacy fence with slats.
  • Norton Shores: up to 6 feet in side and rear yards. Front and street-facing side yards are limited to 4 feet and can't block more than 50% of vision. See Norton Shores.
  • North Muskegon: 6 feet in side and rear yards, but solid fences in a required front yard can't be over 2 feet. See North Muskegon.
  • Muskegon Heights: 6 feet behind the front building line. The ordinance lists solid board fences, open mesh fencing with woven slats, and masonry walls as screening materials. See Muskegon Heights.
  • Whitehall: up to 8 feet in side and rear yards, with front-yard fences capped at 42 inches. See Whitehall.

Townships write their own rules. Check with your township office before you buy materials.

What it costs

HomeGuide's privacy fence guide puts a typical project at $5,000 to $12,000. A 6-foot privacy fence runs $25 to $60 per linear foot installed, and an 8-foot fence $50 to $85. By material:

Privacy materialInstalled, per linear foot
Chain link with privacy slats$14 to $48
Wood$25 to $50
Vinyl$40 to $60
Composite$55 to $85
Aluminum privacy$75 to $130

HomeGuide says slats add $5 to $18 per linear foot to chain link. That option is off the table inside Muskegon city limits because of the screening ban. A 4-foot partial privacy fence runs $30 to $55 per foot.

Choosing a material for Muskegon

Wood is the cheapest true privacy fence. HomeGuide says a wood fence needs resealing every 1 to 2 years, and that not sealing is the most common reason they fail early. Western red cedar lasts 25 years or more, white cedar 15 to 20, and basic untreated pine only 5 to 10.

Vinyl doesn't need sealing and, per HomeGuide, lasts 20 to 30 years on average. Its downsides include swaying in high wind and cracking from impacts or extreme temperature swings. HomeGuide notes that installers often recommend aluminum-reinforced posts for vinyl privacy fences. Worth asking about on an open, windy lakeshore lot.

Composite costs more up front. HomeGuide says it lasts 25 to 30 years or more.

Snow, wind, and sand

A solid fence acts like a snow fence. NOAA's normals for Muskegon County Airport average 87.2 inches of snow a season, and drifts build on the downwind side. A privacy fence along a driveway also takes plowed snow. In loose lakeshore sand, which USDA describes in its Rubicon series, posts hold less firmly, so ask the installer how deep posts go and whether they're set in concrete.

Before you build

  • Get the permit your city or township requires. Most here need one.
  • Know your line. The City of Muskegon notes that only a survey shows exactly where it is.
  • Face the finished side out. North Muskegon, Muskegon Heights, and Whitehall require it, and the City of Muskegon's fence page says it for stockade fences.
  • MISS DIG at least 72 hours before digging.
